Morning Situation Report

Daily Briefing

NWS storm warnings ring the Northeast coast as Hurricane Nolo — still unconfirmed by any agency — closes on Hawaii

Good morning. Start with what is agency-confirmed. The National Weather Service has Storm Warnings (Warning Severe) in force across the coastal and offshore waters from Sandy Hook, NJ south to Cape May and on to Fenwick Island, DE, issued by NWS Mount Holly, NJ. NWS Upton, NY carries matching Storm Warnings from Sandy Hook to Fire Island Inlet, from Fire Island Inlet to Moriches Inlet, and on Long Island Sound west of New Haven/Port Jefferson. If your district touches those waters, expect coastal and marine impacts through the period and treat small-craft and shoreline calls accordingly. CBS News reports a nor'easter is dumping rain along parts of the East Coast.

On the other coast, the threat is reported but not confirmed by any agency: The Guardian and CBS News report that Hurricane Nolo is bearing down on Hawaii with heavy rain, powerful winds, flash floods and extreme surf, and the New York Post reports it as a Category 2 with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph, sitting 145 miles south of South Point — none of it confirmed by an agency to us. Areas still recovering from earlier storms are cited as most exposed.

Also reported but unconfirmed by any agency: satellite fire detections over Ohio (51), Indiana (49), South Carolina (48), Tennessee (43), Arkansas (34) and Georgia (32), and the opening of Oregon's fall hunting season this weekend amid drought and wildfire conditions.
